Frank C. Herbst was born in Cairo, Illinois and lived in Newark, New Jersey. He received a B.F.A. from the Art Institute of Chicago, and  was a member of the Society of Illustrators and a teacher  at the Rhode Island School of Design from 1947 to 1952.
