James Dudley Slay III was born on October 2, 1953, in Jackson,
Mississippi. In 1960, he moved with his family to Phoenix, Arizona, and at
age 13, received private instruction in oil and acrylics. In 1967 Slay moved to California
and his interest in painting the Golden State's
Landscapes became his main
focus. Slay specializes in the traditions of plein air painting and
utilizes the scenery of California for the subject matter of his
work. He
studied at the
New England School of Art and Design in Boston, Massachusetts, Otis Art
Institute in Los Angeles, Art
Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, and with Russian
impressionist, Sergei Bongart. Slay's work is in the permanent
collection of the American Museum of Art in Petropavlovsk,
Kamchatka, Russia and has been shown at the Palos Verdes Art
Center. His residence and studio are in Long Beach,
California.
