Agapito Labios was born Agapito Engel Cifuentes in Pachuca,
Hidalgo,
Mexico. As a young man he took an active part in the Mexican Revolution and was
put in prison for his participation. There he started
painting on the cell walls and the mayor of the town
liked his work and asked Labios to paint his two daughters.
Labios was self taught and made his living doing
portraits of children in the style of Horacio. He
started selling his work on Sundays in the market and soon found success.
He later opened a shop in Mexico City which was patronized by collectors from all over the world.
