Arthur
Beecher Carles was born in Philadelphia on March 9, 1882. From 1900
to 1907 he studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts where he had
many influential instructors. He was known as a modernist and was
heavily involved in the arts in Philadelphia. He spent a lot of time
in France and elsewhere in Europe. He struggled with alcoholism and
in 1941 he had a stroke that left him an invalid for the rest of his
life. Carles died in 1952.
